Up Next Gala
- Animation
Up Next is the National Theatre’s biennial fundraising gala held at the Olivier Theatre, London.
Responding to an increasing sense of division and inequality in the UK, the messaging of the gala championed the unifying power of the arts and the importance of increasing access to it. These themes were reflected in the set and projection design, playing on the idea of the National Theatre as a central tree, spreading branches and roots across the UK.
Through a private dinner, party and silent auction on the night, the gala raised a record-breaking £1.165 million to support the National’s activities – specifically outreach to schools and regional theatres across the UK.
My Involvement
I undertook work on the Up Next Gala for the Video Designer, Akhila Krishnan.
Drawing on the idea of the National Theatre as a tree from which regional initiatives branch and spread, I used a particle language of seeds/pollen/spores to create a suite of assets.
This included a looping outline of the British Isles and a nodal network linking regional locations.
I also animated numerals and selected letters, used as part of the auction.
