Last Warrior Elephant
- Animation
Adapted from Shen Shixi’s famous children’s story of the same name, The Last Warrior Elephant tells the moving tale of Ga Suo, the eponymous animal that survived a war that took place in the Chinese prefecture of Xishuangbanna, in Yunnan province. The production was brought to the stage by SMG Live and featured puppets created by the Shanghai Puppetry Company.
59 Production’s design team used animated visuals across three key layers of the set: an 8K LED screen at the rear of the stage, tree trunk-shaped set pieces and gauzes hanging above the stage at different angles and lengths.
My Involvement
I was responsible for designing and animating three scenes. The team landed on a ‘shadow box’ aesthetic and the majority of the animation was done in 2.5D within After Effects. The scenes achieved a dynamic quality through a playful use of depth, parallax and lighting.
